Fear

Any conflict will create more barriers. If there is fear and you start doing something about it,
then a new fear has entered: fear of the fear. It has become more complex.

So the one thing to be done is, if fear is there, accept it. Don’t do anything about it because doing will not help. Anything that you do out of fear will create more fear; anything that you do out of confusion will add more to confusion. Don’t do anything.

If fear is there note down that fear is there and accept it. What can you do? Nothing can be done; fear is there. See, if you can just note down the fact that fear is there, where is the fear then?

You have accepted it; it has dissolved. Acceptance dissolves; only acceptance, nothing else.
If you fight you create another disturbance and this can go on ad infinitum, then there is no end to it.

People come to me and they say, “We are very afraid, what should we do?” If I give them something to do they will do it with the being which is full of fear, so action will come out of their fear. And the action that comes out of fear cannot be anything other than fear.

What is Courage?

Courage means going into the unknown in spite of all the fears. Courage does not mean fearlessness. Fearlessness happens if you go on being courageous and more courageous. That is the ultimate experience of courage - fearlessness; that is the fragrance when the courage has become absolute. But in the beginning there is not much difference between the coward and the courageous person. The only difference is, the coward listens to his fears and follows them, and the courageous person puts them aside and goes ahead. The courageous person goes into the unknown in spite of all the fears. He knows the fears, the fears are there.

When you go into the uncharted sea, like Columbus did, there is fear, immense fear, because one never knows what is going to happen and you are leaving the shore of safety. You were perfectly okay, in a way; only one thing was missing - adventure. Going into the unknown gives you a thrill. The heart starts pulsating again; again you are alive, fully alive. Every fibre of your being is alive because you have accepted the challenge of the unknown.

To accept the challenge of the unknown in spite of all fears, is courage. The fears are there, but if you go on accepting the challenge again and again, slowly slowly those fears disappear. The experience of the joy that the unknown brings, the great ecstasy that starts happening with the unknown, makes you strong enough, gives you a certain integrity, makes your intelligence sharp. For the first time you start feeling that life is not just a boredom but an adventure. Then slowly slowly fears disappear; then you are always seeking and searching for some adventure.

But basically courage is risking the known for the unknown, the familiar for the unfamiliar, the comfortable for the uncomfortable arduous pilgrimage to some unknown destination. One never knows whether one will be able to make it or not. It is gambling, but only the gamblers know what life is.

Gangaji's master, Papaji, was giving a Satsang in front of many people. At the time she was studying under his tutelage, as well as a few others as apprentices. An audience member asked a question of Papaji. "I live above a panel beater (auto body) shop. They work night and day, and I have trouble meditating because of the constant noise, what can I do to assist my meditation.

Papaji asked his apprentices, including Gangaji, to each give the man advice from their perception. There were various answers possibly along the lines of becoming one with the noise and other various "enlightened" answers…

After the apprentices had give their advice, there was silence for quite a while as everyone waited for the great master's response.

Q: Good day. I've been told that I have some kind of a mission.

B: Oh, you too? (AUD: laughter)

Q: Yes... another one. (Laughing) Do you know... I mean do you have any information about that?

B: I have some; but the idea will be based in general terms that serve all of you, because we have heard this line of thought many times. The notion of having a purpose or having a mission is, in a sense correct, but it isn't as mysterious as many of you think.

The notion first of all is to remember that even though you are reincarnational beings, you have this life to live, once. You will only be this you, one time. So the idea of your foundational purpose in this life is to live this life to the fullest you possibly can. The way you go about that, "your specific mission" ... well, first of all of course, the one being common to all of you is to serve as best you can. To aid in the transformation as it is going on. The way you go about that, your specific methodology, is absolutely left up to your freewill.

The idea, therefore, is to do as we have said: to do the thing that excites you the most in life at any given moment, with all the integrity you can muster. When you do that you will be fulfilling your mission. It's up to you to decide how to go about fulfilling your purpose - that's left completely up to you.

The way you tell what it is, is by following what excites you the most, with integrity. Do that, and you will fulfill all your mission, all your purpose. You see, the idea many times is that when individuals on your planet talk about missions and purposes, you think that that has to necessarily play itself out in the form of a specific endeavor. And it can, but those specific endeavors are not the purpose to your life, they are simply the methodologies that you choose to express the purpose of your life, which is to simply be of service in whatever way excites you the most. Because whatever excites you the most will allow you to be the fullest being you can be; and being the fullest being you can be is what will allow you to serve and assist everyone else. Understand?
